Readers speak out on new APD standards
As reported in the Citizen-Times, the “Asheville Police Department has quietly lowered requirements for new recruits” and my question is why on earth are they doing this? My undergraduate degree is in criminal justice and I policed in Atlanta for more than a decade so I feel somewhat qualified to address this. I believe that the direct quote from interim Police Chief Wade Wood is blatantly racist — “The change is intended to “increase the size, diversity, and quality of the applicant pool.” This quote implies that if you dumb down the requirements, you can add diversity to the Asheville police force. I strongly believe in the professionalism of police officers and requiring less education and training does take the department backwards at a time when strengthening requirements seems to me more prudent. The recent events in our country involving African-Americans, the police and our justice system are evidence of a broken system.
Requiring more from all of us regarding racism is essential for all of our country.
