It’s shameful, Richard. Congress is now going on 104 days after letting the funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) expire.
Even though the lives and health care of 9 million children depend on CHIP, the Republicans in Congress decided they had other priorities. For instance, they thought it was more important to give a $1.5 trillion tax cut to wealthy corporations and the 1%, including the Trump family — a sum that could’ve funded this program for 107 years.
Now, with just 7 days to come up with a long term funding solution, the Republicans in Congress are still using these 9 million children as bargaining chips.
The GOP leaders claim it’s still too expensive and want to slash other health programs to pay for it, but as usual, the facts just aren’t on their side. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office announced this week that extending CHIP funding from 5 years to 10 years actually saves money.
We can absolutely pay for this program. The Republicans in Congress simply don’t have any excuses left.
Join me and tell Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and the rest of the Republicans in Congress: pass the 10-year CHIP extension.
Some states could run out of CHIP funding as early as next week, with dozens more slated to lose it just weeks after. That means millions of children losing their health insurance just because Trump and the Republicans in Congress thought delivering a financial windfall for the wealthy few was more important.
I can’t accept that. That’s why I need your help to show the GOP leaders that the American people can see through their cynical political games.
Add your name right now and demand that Congress pass the 10-year CHIP extension immediately.
