If you haven’t already, you need to read this incredible, personal story from my colleague and friend Miles right now. While Donald Trump tries to cook up a fake “crisis” on the border in order to get money for his wall, millions of Americans like Miles are dealing with the effects of a REAL crisis — climate change. Take a moment to learn more about how climate change has impacted Miles and others like him, and then chip in $3 or more to boost DFA’s work fighting for a Green New Deal. — Karli Wallace Thompson, Senior Digital Manager, Democracy for America
Last year, I sat inside my California home and waited for fire to consume everything my partner Molly and I had worked our entire lives to build.
Outside, the sky emitted an ominous orange glow and everything was covered in a thin film of ash. The only information we had was that our neighbors a block away had been told to evacuate. With no power or cell phone service, our ability to stay up to date on the fire was limited.
The decision to leave or to stay wasn’t an easy one to make. But in the end, the dense smoke made it too difficult to breathe. We had to go.
Could we find somewhere we could stay with our dogs and cat — and for how long? What if we returned to discover that nothing was left? How do you determine what’s important enough to take with you?
The answers to these questions were varied for many Californians. Some of my friends and neighbors lost everything. I was fortunate: My home was still standing when I returned and my family stayed safe. But my city is forever changed. Time here is divided between “Before the Fire” and “After the Fire”.
That’s what happens when you experience a real crisis. Donald Trump should take note.
On Thursday night, we learned that the Trump administration is likely to request that the Army Corps of Engineers divert disaster-related funds designated to assist recovering states like California, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida in order to to build his stupid border wall.
Instead of finding a way to combat the disastrous effects of climate change and helping survivors, Trump is prioritizing the imaginary border “crisis” that he himself created, and it’s going to hurt communities along the border as well as communities like mine.
Democrats need to fight back. We need to oppose Trump’s bogus border wall every step of the way. But we also need to work to implement real solutions to the very real climate crisis we are facing.
Democracy for America is fighting alongside progressive champions like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to make Green New Deal a priority Democrats in 2019. Will you chip in $3 or more to support our work today?
The least a President can do is see your humanity. Whether you agree with their political ideology or not, a President should be able to recognize that in the end we all are striving to achieve the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness laid out in America’s Declaration of Independence.
Once again, Donald Trump has failed to clear the lowest possible bar we could possibly set.
His decision to divert funds designated to help already underfunded states and their struggling residents is a blow to families that have already lost everything — and it will exacerbate the devastating effects of future wildfires and hurricanes.
It is a decision that proves that he cares nothing about Americans as people. He sees us as political pawns to be used and thrown away at his discretion.
Natural disasters are not going away. In fact, unless we take serious, drastic action now they will only get worse. Every year more families will lose loved ones, homes, and possessions — all because the President valued building a concrete or steel monument to himself over their humanity and safety.
We can’t wait around for Trump and his corrupt party to take the climate crisis that is already upon us seriously. We need to stand up for families like mine who are already feeling the impacts of it.
Richard, our homes, our cities, and our states are at risk right now — places that many of us have worked and lived in for years.
The least this President and all of our elected officials could do is try to preserve them. That’s why DFA is taking action now. Please stand with us.
