|richard, this is awful: Over 100 CNN staffers were offered buyouts last week, and reports are circulating that many more could be laid off in the weeks ahead. This is on top of a staggering 2,400 layoffs at media outlets earlier in the year.|
The work these people do fact-checking, investigating, and reporting is critical. A recent Washington Post analysis showed that Trump is telling nearly twice as many lies today as he did at the start of his term, now averaging about nine lies to the public every single day. An aggressive news media is simply more important now than ever.
Daily Kos is the biggest progressive, independent news outlet in the country, and we face the same pressures of digital publishing as other media outlets. Ad revenue can’t support Daily Kos operations on its own, and it hasn’t been able to for years.
Daily Kos is an essential news source, and we depend on readers like you for nearly a third of our revenue. Please chip in $5 a month to support independent, progressive media.

Many factors are driving these trends in digital publishing, but arguably the biggest are Google and Facebook. They’ve aggressively grabbed ad dollars that media outlets have traditionally relied on to make ends meet, and often change how their platforms operate with little or no warning to the publishers that use them to promote their content.
Daily Kos made the shift away from ad revenue and towards becoming a reader-supported news outlet years ago, giving us a head start over others in the field. But being reader-supported outlet means that we rely on readers like you to meet our goals so we can do our work, and hold this administration accountable.
