| I am absolutely livid about the recent wave of extreme abortion bans flooding state legislatures across the country. |
Before I joined the activism team here at Daily Kos, I worked in the abortion rights, access, and funding movements for six years in Virginia and North Carolina. As the former vice chair of an abortion fund in the South, I talked to hundreds of people who called our helpline seeking financial, practical, and emotional support so they could access abortion care.
Because the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding from being used for abortion care—and numerous private insurance companies refuse to cover abortion—many people need to pay for their abortion out of pocket. Working our helpline at the abortion fund, I spoke with callers whose procedures cost anywhere from $350 to $8,000 depending on gestational age.
For countless people across the country working to make ends meet and provide for their families, $350 is just not feasible—alone $8,000. When you factor in childcare, time off of work, and travel costs, the full financial picture of what it means to access abortion care in the United States becomes even more fraught.
If the six-week and eight-week abortion bans sweeping the country are not challenged in court and are allowed to become law—or if Roe v. Wade is overturned—more and more people will be stuck with rising abortion costs because they will need to travel out of hostile states to access care.
No one should be denied access to health care. Daily Kos is raising money for abortion funds in states that have recently passed extreme abortion bans. Can you chip in $5 to help people access abortion care?
In just the past week, over 115,000 Daily Kos community members just like you have taken action to stop abortion bans.
Together, we’ve demanded that federal courts block every single 6-week abortion ban, called on state legislators to stop criminalizing later abortion, and and denounced Alabama Governor Kay Ivey for signing the country’s most restrictive and dangerous anti-abortion bill into law.
Now, we’re asking you to take your support one step further by contributing to abortion funds providing financial and practical support to people seeking abortion care in hostile states.
If we want to ensure that people can access safe, legal, and compassionate abortion care in states like Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ohio, and Missouri, it is critical that we combine action (like signing a petition or calling your legislators) with making sure that money gets into the hands of people who need it most.
richard, can you support abortion funds by giving $5 today? Your contribution will go directly to funds in hostile states.
Thanks for all you do,
Sarah Hogg, Daily Ko
