Donald Trump is threatening ANOTHER government shutdown if Democrats don’t agree to include $5.7 billion in border wall funding in a long-term spending bill by February 15th, less than two weeks from now. And a number of Congressional Democrats have indicated that they might be willing to give him at least some of what he wants.
But four new DFA-endorsed progressive stars in Congress — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) — are pushing back.
They’re asking House Democrats to sign on to a letter demanding cuts to funding for family separation, child detention and other inhumane acts being committed in the name of Trump’s false border “crisis.”
No matter what threats Trump tries to make, under no circumstances should Democrats agree to provide funding for his wall, ICE, or the rest of his cruel border enforcement policies.
In just the first half of Trump’s presidency, we’ve seen what this callous administration is capable of. Rep. Ayanna Pressley said it best in The Daily Beast:
“DHS must be held accountable, not rewarded, for its actions over the last two years, including family separations, barriers to asylum, and the deaths of two children in Border Patrol custody.”
These progressive champions are standing on the right side of history by calling for a deal to reopen the government while denying Trump funding for his anti-immigrant agenda — now, we need to demand this same commitment from the rest of the Democratic party.
The principles in this letter are backed by immigration groups including United We Dream, Detention Watch Network, National Immigration Law Center, and the National Immigrant Justice Center — as well as strong progressive organizations like Indivisible, MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and many, many more.
Thanks for standing with us,
– The DFA Team
