We’re now in Day 12 of the Trump Shutdown — the 4th longest government shutdown in American history.
If the president gets his way, it won’t end until he receives $5 billion for his xenophobic border wall, no matter how many hundreds of thousands of federal workers and families get hurt in the process.
Today, thanks to you, a new wave of progressive leaders is being sworn into Congress as a Democratic majority takes hold in the House. Their first order of business is ending this ridiculous government shutdown.
But we need to make it clear from day one: We will not accept any solution to this shutdown that increases funding for Trump’s deportation force, the wall, or any other racist immigration enforcement mechanism enacted by this administration.
House Democrats are currently pushing a spending package that would temporarily re-open the government and keep immigration funding as-is. But in a meeting with Congressional leadership yesterday, Trump made it clear that he doesn’t care how long the shutdown lasts — he is ready to hold out until he gets at least $5 billion for his border wall.
Democrats have the power to hold the line here. So far, Representative Pelosi and the House leadership have said funding the wall is a non-starter. But now we need them to vote with courage and stand their ground.
We need to fight for responsible immigration policy that doesn’t scapegoat immigrants, separate families, or result in the death of young children in U.S. custody, period. That’s why we can’t afford for Congress to back down now.
We’ve taken back power in the House. Now, we need our representatives to use that power to defend immigrant families and put a check on Donald Trump.
Thanks for standing with us,
