You spoke out. Now, the Democratic National Committee will vote on a climate debate!
Anchorage, Alaska just had its first 90-degree day ever. Last month was the world’s hottest June in recorded history. Warmer air is driving heavier rainfalls — and the resulting floods put our families at risk. Yet polluting oil companies continue to reap enormous profits while politicians and the corporate media refuse to give the climate emergency the attention it deserves.
The climate movement must make sure those in power feel this heatwave. That’s why more than 200,000 people like you have demanded the Democratic presidential candidates participate in a primary debate addressing the climate.
And it’s working! Despite opposition from the Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), a resolution is now circulating in the DNC to hold a climate debate. We could really win — and put the climate emergency on the national stage. It won’t happen unless YOU convince CO’s DNC voting members to vote YES for a climate debate.
We need to act quickly — the DNC will vote on August 22! We only have a short month to mobilize as many voices as possible. I know we can do it, because you’ve already accomplished so much.
- Our movement — of Greenpeace members and many other organizations — delivered 200,000 petition signatures to DNC President Tom Perez.
- You’ve helped push 19 presidential candidates, including frontrunners Biden, Harris, Sanders, and Warren, to support a climate debate. Greenpeace activists were the ones who got Biden to first commit on camera!
- You lit up social media on debate night calling for a real discussion on the Green New Deal and how we’re going to phase out coal, oil and gas that is fueling the climate emergency.
And your state’s voting member will listen to you. Local constituents matter.
The science is clear — fossil fuels have no place in the just transition toward renewables.
That’s why we need to mainstream the call to stop burning fossil fuels in this country. And why we need every presidential candidate — the people with the largest megaphone today — to lay out their plans putting in place a Green New Deal and starting the responsible phaseout of fossil fuels in our country.
We know from the first debate that a few questions to a couple of candidates doesn’t cut it. We need to be able to ask tough questions that the candidates can’t dodge or answer with feel-good empty promises. We need a climate debate!
Thanks for all you do,
Senior Climate Campaigner, Greenpeace USA
P.S. Thanks to people-power, we are one step closer to a primary debate on fossil-fueled climate change. Take the next step and send a message to CO’s DNC delegates and ask them to vote yes on a climate debate. It will take just 60 seconds to add your powerful voice!
