Tell Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell:“Federal government workers and contractors are not bargaining chips. We oppose the border wall and any attempt to use a national emergency declaration to subvert the will of Congress and voters!”ADD YOUR VOICErichard,The longest government shutdown in American history ended 2 weeks ago. This week, we’ll find out whether it truly ended, or was just subject to a brief pause. When announcing that he would re-open the government, Donald Trump made clear that he had learned nothing from his humiliation. He promised to either again take federal government workers and contractors hostage, or declare a national emergency to take funds from real emergencies to fund his wall. This is not the government Americans deserve. But Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and the rest of their enablers in Congress see undermining faith in the federal government as a bonus. Whether it’s underfunding the Social Security Administration or starving Medicare or Medicaid of critical funding, their goal is to chip away at the bedrocks of our society. At the end of this week, 800,000 federal workers and contractors could be back to missing their paychecks. We cannot allow the federal government to be held hostage by this childish President. And we cannot allow this hostage taking to become the norm.Tell Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell: No wall, no more shutdowns!Their childish games have already hurt U.S. families. These are families who need to pay their bills and mortgages. They need to put food on the table and pay for medications. And the bottom line is, more immigration is good for our Social Security system. If we doubled the number of immigrants in America, Social Security would gain around $5 trillion over the next 75 years.1Social Security Works is proud to stand with other leaders in the progressive movement to demand that federal employees and contractors no longer be taken hostage. Sign the petition today!Thank you for standing in solidarity with Social Security Works and our partners across the country in holding Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell accountable to the American people.Michael Phelan Social Security Work |
