URGENT Call to Action:
Budget Veto TONIGHT!Republicans in Raleigh are once again trying to ram through a budget which does not address the concerns of hard-working North Carolina families or our valued educators. Instead of expanding Medicaid and investing in our public schools and students, Republicans have slated even more tax cuts for big corporations, including a tax cut for a big tobacco company. Governor Cooper rightly vetoed this budget. The vote to override Cooper’s veto could happen as early as 7pm TONIGHT. Right now, there are nine Democrats who may be wavering on sustaining the veto, and it is CRITICAL that the people of North Carolina URGE these lawmakers to do what is right. Expand Medicaid. Fund our public schools. No more tax cuts for corporations.CLICK HERE to send an email to these NC Dems and let them know you want them to sustain the Governor’s veto.
ASHEVILLE UPRISING: Energy Justice for North Carolina
Join neighbors, friends and families on July 22 from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Salvage Station as we call for a shift in our energy system while enjoying arts, music, and stories.
Indivisible Asheville is proud to join local partners Community Roots, the Asheville Sunrise Movement and Dogwood Alliance in support of Energy Justice North Carolina and the powerful message they are bringing to Asheville: It’s Time to End the Duke Monopoly.
We are calling for a just and democratic energy system that allows local communities to have a say in how and where their electricity is produced. The current monopoly system stifles clean energy options that these local organizations are working towards.(Please note that Indivisible AVL is co-sponsoring this event in lieu of having our regular monthly meeting.)
Update: Partisan GerrymanderingAs noted last week, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that the Federal judiciary has no role to play in resolving questions about partisan gerrymandering. There’s a new piece on the subject at NC Policy Watch here, and a July 5, 2019 article from the NYTimes: It’s Not Just the White House in 2020 – the Power to Draw Maps is Also at Stake
