“HEALTH CARE CAN’T WAIT” CANDLELIGHT VIGIL“Health Care Can’t Wait” Candlelight Vigil June 5, 2019, Asheville, NC Nearly 100 people gathered in Pack Square Wednesday evening for “Healthcare Can’t Wait,” one of 22 simultaneous Candlelight Vigils across the state coordinated by the NC Justice Center, to call attention to the fact that Medicaid Expansion is a matter of life and death.
Community leader Reverend L.C. Ray opened the vigil with an interfaith prayer and a moment of silence, while we lit the memorial candle in honor of those who have died or suffered because they couldn’t get the care they needed.
Healthcare activist Leslie Boyd, who lost her adult son because he could not get the care he needed, and local resident Jody Read, whose children qualify for Medicaid but who falls into the coverage gap herself, shared their personal experiences. Asheville City Councilwoman Julie Mayfield and Pisgah Legal Services Attorney Jackie Kiger spoke about the impact that the coverage gap has on our community. We ended with these 5 Follow-up Actions, to keep up the pressure on NC to Expand Medicaid NOW.
So join us in solidarity with others across the state, to call on our legislature to pass Medicaid expansion now. It’s time to #CloseTheGapNC!
